The State of Kentucky may issue restricted driving privileges to a driver who has been revoked due to an alcohol-related DUI. The driver must first apply with the convicting court and be ordered to participate. The driver will then submit an Ignition Interlock Application and a non-refundable application fee of $105 to the Kentucky Division of Driver License. The Transportation Cabinet will then issue a letter describing your eligibility based upon what appears on your driver history record.

You will need to bring the Certificate of Installation to the Circuit Clerk in your county of residence.
How do I know if Smart Start’s devices are compliant with my program?

What happens if I violate?
In the event of a violation resulting in an order by the court, your IID can be removed and the Transportation Cabinet can suspend your ignition interlock license.
How often does my IID need to be serviced?
You will be required to return to the installation center at least every 30-60 days for vehicle monitoring, so data can be downloaded from the device and reported to the DMV.
How do the consequences differ for a first and second DUI? Third? Fourth?
For a first DUI (within a 5- year period) with aggravating circumstances, you will need to have the ignition interlock for 6 months.
Second DUI (within a 5 year period) an ignition interlock is required for 12 months.
Third to fifth DUI (within a 5 – year period) an ignition interlock is required for 30 months.
What do I need for removal?
At the end of you suspension period you are authorized to remove the IID. Check with the DMV prior to removing the device to ensure you are authorized to remove.
What if I have a requirement, but I don’t own a vehicle?
If you do not own the vehicle you plan to install the Ignition Interlock device into, a written notarized statement from the vehicle’s owner will be required at the time of installation of the device.
Do I need the device on all of my vehicles?
You are only required to install a device on your primary vehicle; however you may choose to install devices on additional vehicles. The holder of an Ignition Interlock License is only authorized to drive a vehicle with an ignition interlock device installed.

All IIDs in the state are required to have a camera.
Where does installation fall based on my condition?
You may install only after arraignment of the DUI with alcohol offense, and application made to the courts for authorization to apply for an ignition interlock license and device and approval by the courts for you to apply for an ignition interlock license with DMV.
Does the camera watch me all the time?
No, the camera only takes a picture when you are asked to provide a breath sample. The camera does not take videos, and there is no live streaming.
How do I know who my State authority is?
Your State authority will be the Prosecutor in the court in which the device was ordered.

How can I pay for calibration?
When you go into the shop for service, you can pay with a credit card. However, some shops will allow you to pay in cash or with a pre-paid Visa card.

Records will automatically be forwarded by Smart Start to the court which ordered the device.
Does this thing hurt my vehicle?
No, but the Smart Start IID works most effectively if you have a healthy, working battery.
